This time we will be looking at the newly released Nexus 3.

We will be looking at this in 2 different videos.

Rather than making sounds from scratch, in Nexus 3

a variety of highly polished presets are contained in this plugin.

Because of this, those who are new to synth sound design

can quickly utilize popular and recent synth sounds in their own tracks.

There are some changes to activation for this product, so we will look at this first.

Though versions up to Nexus 2 required an E-licenser key,

but this has been removed and now it is activated directly on your computer.

First we will go to their homepage and login.

First go to ACCOUNT and then DOWNLOADS.

You will be transferred to this page

After download is complete, install the app and activate it.

You will be prompted for your email address and password when you first open it,

By doing so, you will move to this page

and Nexus 3 will auto-download,

By purchasing the product, you can download various sound libraries and presets.

There are many fantastic preset sounds, and we recommend downloading all of them.

By clicking Not Installed from above, you can display the products that you have not downloaded yet.

Click to begin download.

If you are low on space on your main drive,

from LIBRARY FOLDERs, click the Browse button to change where the sounds are installed as well.

By having sounds on an external drive,

After this is finished, open up your DAW and open Nexus 3 as you would any other plugin.

You will be prompted to activate it when you first open it

so enter the same email and password as mentioned earlier, used when purchasing Nexus 3.

When this is complete, open up your DAW and open Nexus 3 as you would any other plugin.

You will be prompted to activate when you first use it

so enter in the same email address and password used when purchasing Nexus 3.

Press Activate to begin using Nexus 3.

In addition, you can use up to 2 computers with 1 license,

meaning you can have 1 home work station

and a laptop to go,

and use this product without needing a USB key.

This completes our look at activating this plugin.

As you can see in this window,

a beautiful new interface has been implemented.

It displays wonderfully even on 4K displays.

You can drag the corners to adjust the size of the window as well.

Nexus 3 presets are found in the Librarian menu.

On the left we have the name of the preset packs which we saw when we downloaded earlier.

Any pack you purchase later will show up in this list as well.

By selecting all from the top, you can find presets from all of the available packs.

Presets are found on the right, and we can see that a total of 3,455 presets are currently available.

Having this many presets makes it difficult to find your desired sounds.

In this case, you can use Categories in this middle to narrow down your results.

For example, we want a bass sound.

We want to look through all packs so ALL is selected.

We can choose instrument name, playing style, and more from the Categories in Thi middle.

We have Bass here so we’ll go ahead and select it.

By doing so, we’ve narrowed down the results to 1/10th.

By clicking on a preset name,

you can use click preview,

and although the preset isn’t loaded yet, you can preview the sound.

This is an incredibly useful function.

Double click to load a preset once you find the sound you like.

The loading speed for a preset

has been upgraded to up to 8 times faster than Nexus 2.

The CPU usage has been greatly improved as well,

allowing you to utilize multiple instances of Nexus 3 within a track.

Lets hear how this sounds with the beat.

It sounds like so.

Of course, you can double click while listening

to easily switch between different presets.

Like so.

If you still have too many sounds to choose from,

you can narrow down with sound characters up top.

For example, we can select dark and narrow down to 106 results.

You can select multiple characteristics as well.

For example, we can select dark as well as spiky

and only sounds that fit these characteristics will be displayed.

Like so.

In addition, another thing to remember

is by clicking a current lit character again changes the color to RED.

This means that the selected character is being removed from the list.

That means currently presets that are dark and not spiky are being displayed.

The key to products with various presets becomes the ability to quickly search for sounds

so we highly recommend getting the most out of these parameters while searching for sounds.

When you preview sounds, you will most likely find ones that you really like as well.

In this case, there is a heart icon on the right of a preset.

By turning it on, the preset is added to favourites,

and you can quickly access them from the heart icon above.

If you add a sound to your presets but decide you don’t want it there,

simply click on it again to remove it from your favourites.

Similar to earlier,

by clicking on the heart button again, it will turn RED.

Like earlier, presets that are favorited will be removed from the list of results.

Another tool for managing presets is the bookmarks folder.

By right clicking in the folder area, Create new bookmark folder will be displayed

so we’ll select this.

A folder will be added that you can name.

This is an original folder,

and by dragging in presets, you can add them into the folder.

Of course, you can make multiple folders,

and you can split them into genres as well.

If you want to delete a preset from a folder it was added to,

right click the preset and select Remove from bookmarks, to remove it like so.

From these panels on the right and left, you can easily control sounds.

Rather than completely changing the sounds,

it will make edits to the preset that is selected.

We have a seperate video on Nexus 2 that explains each of these sections,

so check out that video for more info.

We will take a basic look here,

Each section has a power button, and you must click it to activate it.

Since we are using a bass sound we will keep the delay off.

The reverb tail is a little long so we will lower the mix and decay.

We can use the lo-cut to avoid reverberating the low frequencies.

Filter Mod contains a low-pass filter, with no motions currently applied.

We can increase the brightness after it plays with the envelope

We can enhance this with Resonance

and make the effect apply faster with attack

we will adjust the sustain to the max to ensure the sound doesn’t return back to the original.

Like this for example. If we give this a listen:

With the filter off.

We can add motion like so.

Though this applies to all sections,

by clicking this menu button, you will see the setting choice locked.

By locking an area,

even if you change to a different preset, the locked parameters will remain the same.

This allows you to keep the same effects while changing the fundamental tone of a sound.

Be sure to try out this tool as well.

Next, features from above comes in handy when designing sound.

We decided to add a strings preset that plays long notes to go with the bass sound.

Like so.

By looking at the preset features, we can see layers, and see that 2 sounds are being layered.

Some presets will have more layers

or may have multiple oscillators in a layer.

By clicking these portions, you can mute each layer.

These 2 layers together create this sound.

You can click on an oscillator to turn it off as well.

These 4 orange bars allow you to adjust volume, pan, semi-tone tuning, and cent tuning.

For example, the volume balance

We could lower this side,

and change the balance like so to greatly change the sound.

If the sound gets too large/soft with this volume balance,

you can adjust the overall volume from the output above as well.

You can control the panning of each layer here as well.

For example, we can spread each layer left/right to get width.

We can transpose the layer up by 12 semi-tone or 1 octave as well.

Or we can add slight difference in pitch with detune to add thickness.

Many effects can be created like so

and come in handy to make the sound wider and thicker.

Last but not least, on the left we have the new

4 macro knobs.

You can add parameters in Nexus to a macro knob and control them simultaneously.

To do so, first go to the modulation menu.

Here we have a modulation matrix.

Be sure that the power is on for the knobs.

The knobs on the left determine what is being used to control

and the right area determines what is being controlled.

First we will choose macro knob 1 for what is controlling.

The parameter that will be controlled by macro 1 can be designated like so.

For example, we will turn on Filter and select a low-pass.

The master filter’s cutoff on the front panel will be this mstCut (master cut) parameter.

This completes the prep work.

Last, drag this area to

choose whether it’ll move in positive or negative amounts.

Lets set the cut-off to the middle

and if we set it to a negative amount and raise the macro knob

the sound will change from 1 downwards.

On the other hand, with a positive amount,

it will raise above the center point.

For example, we can set it as 0 with no sound and gradually

increase the frequencies like so.

In addition, multiple parameters can be controlled by 1 macro knob as well.

We can select macro knob 1 again and select the front reverb mix.

This parameter.

We can increase the reverb as well.

Because we want to increase the amount as the macro knob is turned,

we will set a positive amount.

Lets set the reverb decay a little long and give it a listen.

We now control both cutoff and reverb.

In addition, automation can be applied to these macros as well.

In Cubase, turn on this light button and move it while the track plays.

This allows you to create more expression within a song as well.

You can easily save this fully edited preset to use in another project as well.

Click on the area on the right of the preset name

and click save preset.

A user preset folder will be created, and it will be save here.

You can rename it by right clicking, allowing for more flexibility.

This completes our first tutorial on Nexus 3.

We took a look at presets, side panels, layers, and macro controls.

Next time we will look at the upgraded arpeggiator, transgate, and effects.
